Human Infections of Avian Influenza in Washington State

Oct 20, 2024 - The first presumed human infections of avian influenza are under investigation in Washington State. Four agricultural workers in Franklin County have tested positive. The workers developed symptoms after working with infected poultry, which were euthanized. The Washington DOH and the local health district are providing personal protective equipment and are monitoring diseased workers as well as providing treatment. According to the CDC, risk from avian influenza is low, but those with jobs with potentially infected animals should take precautions. Members of the public are reminded not to handle dead birds or to allow pets near them.
