FIT – Family Initiated Treatment for Mental Health

Apr 9, 2026

The Washington State Healthcare Authority makes available this toolkit — designed for use in schools — to raise awareness about the purpose, process, and impact of Family Initiated Treatment (FIT). FIT can be used to provide a pathway to care before a situation becomes a crisis. Schools and ESDs play an important role in identifying mental health needs of students. Working with the teachers, school counselors, and psychologists helps families to be engaged and learn about the process for treatment if needed. In Washington State, behavioral health treatment options are available in different settings and at different levels, from outpatient treatment at community agencies or school-based health centers to residential care.
