Health Care for Pets Helps Humans

Aug 7, 2025
A new study led by the UW found that integrating veterinary and human health care increased access to preventative care for both people and their pets. The Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences' Center for One Health Research operates a clinic to help address barriers faced by unhoused people with pets. Studies have shown this population is less likely to visit medical facilities, and that some chose veterinary care for their animals over care for themselves. The Seattle One Health Clinic was designed to address these barriers. A nurse practitioner and a veterinarian provide primary care services, and students who volunteer as patient navigators help to coordinate care and other needs, such as help with documenting pets as support animals. The result is better health care for the pet owners.
