Considering Racial Bias in Ophthalmology
Oct 24, 2024 - Students in a UW Medicine Department of Ophthalmology class asked questions about why race was being used as a diagnostic criterion in a case being presented. They raised the question, Why was race — a social construct — a criterion for diagnosis? The professor was uncertain how to respond; race was commonly cited in case studies. Their questions from the class in 2020 lead to a new focus in the department and subsequent redirection in the use of race in case studies.
